Anniversary of Sustainable Development Goals celebrated on 25 September

Monday 25 September 2023 marks the eighth anniversary of the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the UN Member States. To honour this day and the Sustainable Development Goals, the Government will fly flags at the Government Place and Merikasarmi. This is part of the global SDG Flag Day celebrations.

The UN Member States adopted the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. The global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development sets 17 common goals for all countries in the world that should be achieved by 2030. This year we are halfway through the period to implement the global 2030 Agenda that started in 2015. Finland is fully committed to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

“Based on international comparisons, Finland is one of the leading countries in sustainable development. We have a lot to offer and a great responsibility for the global effort to promote sustainable development. Finland is working hard to achieve the goals, both nationally and together with other countries,” Prime Minister Petteri Orpo says on the anniversary of the SDGs.

Finland and the other Nordic countries have ranked among the best in international comparisons related to sustainable development. According to the latest report, Finland has performed very well with respect to goals related to poverty, energy and education. Finland is one of the leading countries in promoting sustainable development, but according to the assessment of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in Finland published in February 2023, it will be difficult even for Finland to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The main challenges Finland is facing are related to ecological sustainability, global responsibility and negative transboundary impacts.
