Press release

The Indonesian Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources Ignasius Jonan will visit Finland on 21–22 May 2018. He will meet with Minister of the Environment, Energy and Housing Kimmo Tiilikainen on 21 May and Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä on 22 May. His programme will also include a presentation of Finnish companies and a visit to Fortum’s Circular Economy Village in Riihimäki.

After his visit to Finland, Minister Jonan will travel to Copenhagen to attend the international Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM9) on 24 May. Minister Tiilikainen will be there, too.

Indonesia is a fast developing growth economy and one of the most interesting energy-sector markets in the world. The country is currently implementing a major investment programme. There is demand for capital goods, machinery and equipment, which are among Finland’s most important export products. The Finnish exports to Indonesia were EUR 256 million in 2017, while imports amounted to EUR 151 million.

The relations between Finland and Indonesia are good at levels, and there is a strong focus on economic and commercial cooperation. When President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö visited Jakarta in October 2015, the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of energy. Similar MoUs have been signed in the field of education and the sustainable use of natural resources in the forestry sector.

Minister Tiilikainen signed the MoU on cooperation in the forestry sector on behalf of Finland when Indonesia's Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar visited Finland in April 2017.  Minister of Economic Affairs Lintilä in his turn headed a Team Finland trade mission to Jakarta in June 2017. He was accompanied by a business delegation consisting of companies in the energy, bioeconomy, cleantech and digitalisation sectors. Another Team Finland trade mission to Indonesia, focusing on the health and energy sectors, is planned for October 2018.

Companies will present their expertise to the Indonesians visitors

There are around 20 Finnish companies operating in Indonesia at the moment. Four of them (Valmet, Wärtsilä, Chempolis and AW-Energy) will present their expertise and activities to Minister Jonan’s delegation on the afternoon of Monday 21 May in an event hosted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. The discussions will continue over a dinner hosted by Minister Tiilikainen, where even other Finnish companies operating in Indonesia will be represented.

On Tuesday 22 May, the Indonesian delegation will visit Fortum’s Circular Economy Village in Riihimäki and learn about its waste sorting and recycling facilities and waste-to-energy power plant. Next, Minister Jonan will be travelling to Malmö and Copenhagen to attend the international energy meetings Mission Innovation (MI-3) and Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM9), which are organised by the Nordic countries and the European Commission.
